Infant Health and Safety: The Basics

Always place your baby on their back to sleep for naps and at night.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of an infant younger than 1 year of age. Babies are at a higher risk for SIDS if they:

  • Sleep on their stomach
  • Sleep on a soft surface
  • Sleep on or under bedding or sheets
  • Get too hot during sleep
  • Are exposed to cigarette smoke in the womb or in the environment
  • Sleep in an adult bed with parents, other children or pets

Use a firm sleep surface. Do not use pillows, blankets, crib bumpers, soft objects, toys, and loose bedding. Do not smoke or let anyone smoke around your baby. Dress your baby in light sleep clothing. Baby should not sleep in an adult bed, on a couch, or on a chair alone, with you, or with anyone else.
